Information on Distinctions and Medals of the Polish Chemical Society

• Honorary President Title is the highest distinction of the Polish Chemical Society awarded to one of the former presidents who has made a particular contribution to the Society. The Honorary President receives a diploma, is a permanent member of the Main Board Presidium, and acts as the chairman of the Convention of Former Presidents of the Society.
• Honorary Membership Title is awarded to a chemist with outstanding scientific achievements and special merits for Polish chemistry and the Polish Chemical Society. An Honorary Member receives a diploma, membership rights, is invited to events organized by the Society, and is exempt from paying the membership fee.
• Honorary Badge is awarded for outstanding merits to the Polish Chemical Society. The badge is presented together with an ID card.
• Maria Skłodowska-Curie Medal is awarded to a chemist permanently working abroad for outstanding scientific achievements of worldwide importance in chemistry and merits for the Polish chemical community. The bronze medal bears the likeness and name of Maria Skłodowska-Curie on one side. On the other side, there is the inscription "Quo Magis Veritas Propagatur", "Artium Chimicarum Societas Polona", and "PTCh", as well as the name of the person to whom the medal was awarded. The medal is accompanied by a diploma.
• Jędrzej Śniadecki Medal is awarded to a chemist working in Poland for outstanding scientific achievements of worldwide importance in chemistry. The bronze medal bears the likeness of Jędrzej Śniadecki and the years of his birth and death. On the other side, there is the inscription "Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne" and "PTCh", as well as the name of the person to whom the medal was awarded. The medal is accompanied by a diploma.
• Wiktor Kemula Medal is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of analytical chemistry. The bronze medal bears the likeness of Wiktor Kemula and the years of his birth and death. On the other side, there is the inscription "Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne" and the name of the person to whom the medal was awarded. The medal is accompanied by a diploma stating that it is a joint distinction of the Polish Chemical Society and the Committee on Analytical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Annex No. I).
• Jan Zawidzki Medal is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of physical chemistry. The bronze medal bears the likeness of Jan Zawidzki and the years of his birth and death. On the other side, there is the inscription "Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne" and the name of the person to whom the medal was awarded. The medal is accompanied by a diploma.
• Bogusława and Włodzimierz Trzebiatowski Medal is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of inorganic chemistry. The silver-plated bronze medal bears the likeness of Bogusława Trzebiatowska, the years of her birth and death, and the PTChem logo on one side, and on the other – the likeness of Włodzimierz Trzebiatowski, the years of his birth and death, and the PTChem logo. The medal is accompanied by a diploma.
• Stanisław Kostanecki Medal is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of organic chemistry. The bronze medal bears the likeness of Stanisław Kostanecki and the years of his birth and death. On the other side, there is the inscription "Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne" and the name of the person to whom the medal was awarded. The medal is accompanied by a diploma.
• Ignacy Mościcki Medal is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of chemical technology and engineering, forming the basis for industrial implementation of innovative chemical products and processes. The bronze medal bears the likeness of Ignacy Mościcki and the years of his birth and death. On the other side, there is the inscription "Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne" and "PTCh", as well as the name of the person to whom the medal was awarded. The medal is accompanied by a diploma stating that it is a joint distinction of the Polish Chemical Society and the Standing Committee of Chemical Technology Congresses (Annex No. II).
• Jan Harabaszewski Medal is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of chemistry didactics or for outstanding achievements in chemistry teaching. The bronze medal bears the likeness of Jan Harabaszewski, the years of his birth and death, and the inscription "PTCh". On the other side, there is the inscription "Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne" and the name of the person to whom the medal was awarded. The medal is accompanied by a diploma.
• Włodzimierz Kołos Medal and Award is a distinction awarded every two years for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of theoretical chemistry or chemical physics – jointly by the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Warsaw and the Polish Chemical Society (Annex No. III). The bronze medal bears the likeness of Włodzimierz Kołos and the years of his birth and death. On the other side, there is the inscription "Societas Chimica Polonorum", "Universitas Varsoviensis", and "Servire Veritatis Kołos Lectio Praemiumque", as well as the name of the person to whom the medal was awarded. The medal is accompanied by a diploma. Awarding the medal is combined with a prize of 2000 USD and a lecture delivered by the laureate at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Warsaw.
• Commemorative Medal is awarded to persons particularly meritorious to the Polish Chemical Society supporting its activity in the country and abroad. The silver-plated tombac medal bears the likeness of Maria Skłodowska-Curie, her name, and the years of her birth and death. The other side shows a view of the seat of the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum and the Polish Chemical Society, as well as the inscription "Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne" and the dates "1919" (founding of PTChem) – "1994" (75th anniversary of PTChem). The medal is accompanied by a diploma.
• Zofia Matysikowa Distinction (Medal) is awarded to chemistry teachers, members of PTChem, for outstanding didactic and educational achievements. The bronze medal bears the likeness of Zofia Matysikowa and the inscription "Wyróżnienie im. Zofii Matysikowej" on one side, and on the other – the inscription "Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne", "Sekcja Dydaktyki Chemii", and "PTCh". The medal is accompanied by a diploma stating that it is a distinction of the Chemistry Didactics Section of the Polish Chemical Society.
• Jan Czochralski Lecture is a distinction awarded to an outstanding chemist in Poland within two years of obtaining the academic degree of habilitated doctor, before the age of forty. The Polish Chemical Society takes patronage over the delivery of a series of lectures by the distinguished person in selected branches of the Society, thereby promoting them at the threshold of an independent scientific career. The distinction is confirmed by a diploma.

Information on submitting applications and rules for granting distinctions and medals of the Polish Chemical Society

1. Candidates for the Honorary President Title are submitted to the President of the Main Board (ZG) by the Branches of the Polish Chemical Society (PTChem) by the end of March each year. Candidatures are considered at the June meeting of the ZG PTChem and presented for acceptance at the nearest General Assembly of Members.
2. Candidates for distinctions (Honorary Membership Title, Jan Czochralski Lecture) and medals (except for: Wiktor Kemula Medal, Włodzimierz Kołos Medal and Award, Ignacy Mościcki Medal, Commemorative Medal, and Zofia Matysikowa Distinction (Medal)) may be submitted by: members of the Main Board Presidium or Branches or Scientific Sections substantively appropriate for the distinction or medal (in all cases – on the initiative of at least 10 PTChem members). Applications along with documentation should be sent to the ZG PTChem by October 1 of the year preceding the granting of the distinction or medal, exclusively electronically, to the e-mail address: [email protected]. Candidates for honoring with the Wiktor Kemula Medal, Włodzimierz Kołos Medal and Award, and Ignacy Mościcki Medal may also be submitted by entities listed in Annexes I-III respectively. Applications for granting the Zofia Matysikowa Distinction (Medal) may be submitted by entities listed on the website of the Chemistry Didactics Section of PTChem: http://dydaktyka.ptchem.pl/. Applications should be sent to the entities indicated respectively in Annexes I-III or on the website of the Chemistry Didactics Section of PTChem.
3. Applications for granting distinctions or medals along with justification (recommendation letter showing the most important scientific achievements – up to 7000 characters with spaces) and a short CV (up to 5000 characters with spaces), referred to in point 2, should contain a list of at most 50 publications of the candidate (marking 5-10 most representative ones) and bibliometric data.
4. Applications for the distinction of Honorary Membership Title and Jan Czochralski Lecture as well as Medals: Maria Skłodowska-Curie, Jędrzej Śniadecki, Jan Zawidzki, Bogusława and Włodzimierz Trzebiatowski, Stanisław Kostanecki, and Jan Harabaszewski are considered by the PTChem Distinctions and Medals Commission. The Commission presents one candidate in each category to the Main Board of PTChem for acceptance. The candidate for the Wiktor Kemula Medal is selected and presented for acceptance to the Main Board of PTChem by the Committee on Analytical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) (Annex No. I). The candidate for the Ignacy Mościcki Medal is selected and presented to the Main Board of PTChem for acceptance by the Ignacy Mościcki Medal Commission.
5. The Main Board of PTChem makes a decision on granting the distinction or medal referred to in point 4 at the December meeting by a simple majority of votes (>50% of "yes" votes of persons present at the meeting). In the event of an equal number of votes, the vote of the meeting chairperson decides.
6. Candidates for the distinction of Honorary Badge or Commemorative Medal may be submitted by members of the Convention of Former Presidents of the Society, members of the Main Board Presidium, and chairpersons of PTChem Branches and Sections. The Honorary Badge and Commemorative Medal are granted by the decision of the Main Board Presidium of PTChem.
7. Distinctions and medals are presented at the annual PTChem Congresses during the opening ceremony or deliberations of sections/microsymposia, or on the occasion of other scientific events; information about the laureates appears on the PTChem website: www.ptchem.pl.
8. The procedure for selecting the laureate and presenting the Włodzimierz Kołos Medal and Award is given in Annex No. III, and for submitting candidates for the Zofia Matysikowa Distinction (Medal) and selecting laureates on the website: http://dydaktyka.ptchem.pl/ (Chemistry Didactics Section of PTChem).
