Information on the Awards of the Polish Chemical Society

1. The Polish Chemical Society (PTChem) grants the following Awards:
   • PTChem Award for Scientific Achievements (Habilitation)
   • PTChem Award for a Doctoral Dissertation
   • PTChem Award for a Master's Thesis
   • The Bronisław Znatowicz Award
   • The Aleksander Zamojski Award
   • The Jacek Rychlewski Award
   • The Jacek Gawroński Award
2. The PTChem Award for scientific achievements in the field of exact and natural sciences in the discipline of chemical sciences and in the field of engineering and technical sciences in the disciplines of chemical engineering and materials engineering, which were the basis for conferring the degree of Doctor of Science (Habilitation), is awarded via a competition to a young scientist, a member of the Polish Chemical Society (with a minimum of 4 years of membership tenure), who obtained the degree of Doctor of Science (Habilitation) in the year preceding the award, before the age of 37.
3. The PTChem Award for a doctoral dissertation is awarded via a competition to a young researcher, a member of the Polish Chemical Society (with a minimum of 2 years of membership tenure), who defended a doctoral dissertation in the field of exact and natural sciences in the discipline of chemical sciences and in the field of engineering and technical sciences in the disciplines of chemical engineering and materials engineering in the year preceding the award (the defense occurred before the age of 30). In the case of female candidates taking maternity leave during the preparation of the doctoral dissertation, the age limit is extended by 1 year, i.e., until the age of 31.
4. The PTChem Award for a master's thesis is awarded via a competition to a graduate, a member of the Polish Chemical Society, who defended a master's thesis in the field of exact and natural sciences in the discipline of chemical sciences and in the field of engineering and technical sciences in the disciplines of chemical engineering and materials engineering in the year preceding the award.
5. The Bronisław Znatowicz Award is awarded to the author or authors of the best article published in the journal Wiadomości Chemiczne in the year preceding the award. The award is granted by the Editorial Board of Wiadomości Chemiczne.
6. The Aleksander Zamojski Award is awarded to a member of the Polish Chemical Society for a distinguished doctoral dissertation in the field of organic chemistry – stereochemistry (defense occurred before the age of 30; in the case of female candidates taking maternity leave during the preparation of the doctoral dissertation, the age limit is extended by 1 year, i.e., until the age of 31), jointly by the Polish Chemical Society, the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) in Warsaw, and the Nobilus Ent Company. The award is presented with a diploma confirming that the distinction is joint. Two distinctions may be awarded for the A. Zamojski Award.
7. The Jacek Rychlewski Award is awarded via a competition for a distinguished master's thesis in quantum chemistry or a thesis from other scientific areas utilizing quantum chemistry methods, defended in the year preceding the award. The award is granted jointly by the Polish Chemical Society and the Faculty of Chemistry of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań upon the motion of the Award Chapter. A distinction may be awarded.
8. The Jacek Gawroński Award is awarded via a competition for a distinguished master's thesis in organic chemistry. The award is granted jointly by the Polish Chemical Society and the Faculty of Chemistry of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań upon the motion of the Award Chapter.
9. Theses (master's or doctoral) may be submitted for only one award.
10. Detailed information regarding the submission of applications for Polish Chemical Society awards and the procedure for selecting Laureates is contained in Annex 1 to the regulations.
11. Laureates of Awards: for scientific achievements, for a distinguished doctoral dissertation, and for a distinguished master's thesis are obliged to publish a review article concerning their scientific achievement in a special congress issue of the journal Wiadomości Chemiczne and to deliver a lecture/communication in the section substantively appropriate for the specialty represented by the Laureate.
12. The manuscript of the work referred to in point 11, prepared in accordance with the requirements of the journal Wiadomości Chemiczne, must be sent electronically to the address [email protected] by August 31st of the year in which the award was granted.
13. Submitted applications for awards are reviewed by the appropriate Award Commissions of the Polish Chemical Society appointed for a term by the President of the Main Board upon the motion of the Presidium of the Main Board or, in the case of the Jacek Rychlewski Award and the Jacek Gawroński Award, upon the motion of the Chairpersons of the Chapters of these awards. The Bronisław Znatowicz Award is granted by the Editorial Board of Wiadomości Chemiczne.
14. If a doctoral or master's thesis is submitted to the competition for which a member of the Commission was the supervisor, in such a situation, they are excluded from participating in the procedure deciding on the granting of the award in that given edition.
15. Commissions make decisions on granting awards and distinctions by a simple majority of votes.
16. After reviewing the submissions, the Commissions present their proposals at the meeting of the Presidium of the Main Board by the end of May each year.
17. The Presidium of the Main Board, after reviewing the proposals of the Commissions, approves the Awards by vote and informs the Main Board at the spring meeting about the decisions made.
18. The final decision on granting Awards is made by the Main Board of PTChem in a secret ballot separately for each Award.
19. The Main Board of the Polish Chemical Society annually determines the amount of the awards (except for the Aleksander Zamojski Award, the Jacek Rychlewski Award, and the Jacek Gawroński Award) and remits the due tax to the Tax Office.
20. Awards are presented at the Society's Annual Congresses.

The Regulations were approved on December 15, 2025, by the Main Board of the Polish Chemical Society based in Warsaw via Resolution No. 4/2025. The Regulations enter into force on the day of adoption.
