Information on PCS awards

The PCS award for outstanding scientific achievements in the area of chemistry that have been the basis for conferment of postdoctoral degree of habilitation is given to a young research worker competitively selected who in the year prior to being awarded obtained a postdoctoral degree of habilitation prior to completion of 37 year of age.
The PCS award for outstanding doctoral dissertation is given to a competitively selected young researcher who in the year prior to being awarded defended a distinguished doctoral dissertation in chemistry. The defence of the doctoral thesis must have taken place before the candidate completed 30 years of age, or when a candidate took maternal leave while working towards doctorate, before the candidate completed 31 years of age,
The PCS award for distinguished master’s thesis is given to a competitively selected student who in the year prior to being awarded defended a distinguished master’s thesis in chemistry.
The Bronisław Znatowicz Award is given to the author or authors of the best paper published in Wiadomości Chemiczne, in the year prior to giving the award.
The Aleksander Zamojski Award is given every year for the distinguished doctoral dissertation in organic chemistry – stereochemistry, jointly by the Polish Chemical Society, Institute of Organic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and Nobilus Ent. Company, the award is given together with a diploma confirming the joint decision of the above mentioned three entities.
The Jacek Rychlewski Award is given every year to a competitively selected candidate who presented in the year prior to being awarded a distinguished master’s thesis in quantum chemistry or other domains of science in which the methods of quantum chemistry were applied. The award is given jointly by the Polish Chemical Society and Faculty of Chemistry, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, and approved by the Chapter whose members’ names are listed on the relevant website at http://www.qchem.amu.edu.pl/Kapitula.pdf. A distinction can also be awarded.

Information on the PCS distinctions and medals

The title of Honorary Chairperson is the highest distinction awarded by PCS given to one of the former Chairpersons whose service to PCS was particularly valuable. The Honorary Chairperson gets a special diploma, becomes a permanent member of Presidium of General Board and a chairperson of the Council of Former Chairpersons of PCS.
The title of Honorary Member is given to a chemist of outstanding scientific achievements and remarkable services to Polish chemistry and PCS. The Honorary Member gets a special diploma, has the rights of a member, is invited by meetings organized by PCS and is released from membership fee.
The Badge of Honour is awarded for outstanding services to PCS, it is given together with a special document.
The Maria Skłodowska-Curie Medal is awarded to a chemist who is permanently employed abroad, for outstanding scientific achievements of significance to world chemical science and for services to Polish chemists. On the face of the bronze medal there is a portrait of Maria Skłodowska-Curie and her name. On the reverse there is the inscription “Quo Magis Veritas Propagatur”, “Artium Chimicarum Societas Polona” , PTChem and the name and surname of the person awarded, the medal is given with a special diploma.
The Jędrzej Śniadecki Medal is awarded to a chemist permanently employed in Poland for outstanding scientific achievements of significance to world chemical science. The face of the bronze medal presents a portrait of Jędrzej Śniadecki with the years of his birth and death. On the reverse there is the inscription “Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne”, PTChem and the name and surname of the person awarded, the medal is given with a special diploma.
The Wiktor Kemula Medal is awarded for outstanding achievements in analytical chemistry. The face of the bronze medal shows a portrait of Wiktor Kemula and the years of his birth and death. The reverse holds the inscription “Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne” and the name and surname of the person awarded. The medal is given with a special diploma informing that the medal is awarded jointly by PCS and the Committee of Analytical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, (Enclosure no. 1).
The Jan Zawidzki Medal is awarded for outstanding achievements in physical chemistry. The face of the bronze medal shows a portrait of Jan Zawidzki and the years of his birth and death. The reverse presents the inscription “Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne” and the name and surname of the person awarded. The medal is given with a special diploma.
The Bogusława and Włodzimierz Trzebiatowscy Medal is awarded for outstanding achievements in inorganic chemistry. The medal is made of silver-plated bronze and shows a portrait of Bogusława Trzebiatowska with the years of her birth and death on the one side, and a portrait of Włodzimierz Trzebiatowski with the years of his birth and death on the other side. Both sides also show a logo of PCs. The medal is given with a special diploma.
The Stanisław Kostanecki Medal is awarded for outstanding achievements in organic chemistry. The face of the bronze medal shows a portrait of Stanisław Kostanecki together with the years of his birth and death. The reverse presents the inscription “Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne”, the name and surname of the person awarded. The medal is given with a special diploma.
The Włodzimierz Kołos Medal and Award is given every two years for outstanding scientific achievements in theoretical chemistry or chemical physics. It is a joint distinction given by The Faculty of Chemistry, Warsaw University and PCS (Enclosure no. 3). The face of the bronze medal shows a portrait of Włodzimierz Kołos with the years of his birth and death. The reverse displays the inscription “Societas Chimica Polonorum”, “Universitas Varsoviensis” and “Servire Veritatis Kołos Lectio Praemiumque” , together with the name and surname of the person awarded. The medal is given with a special diploma and USD 2000. The awarded person is invited to deliver a series of lectures at the Faculty of Chemistry, Warsaw University.
The Jan Harabaszewski Medal is awarded for outstanding achievements in chemistry teaching. The face of the bronze medal presents a portrait of Jan Harabaszewski and the years of his birth and death. The reverse displays the inscription “Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne” and the name and surname of the person awarded. The medal is given with a special diploma.
The Ignacy Mościcki Medal is awarded for outstanding achievements in chemical technology that have become basis for industrial implementations of innovative products and chemical processes. The face of the bronze medal presents a portrait of Ignacy Mościcki with the years of his birth and death. The reverse shows the inscription “Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne”. “PTCh” and the name and surname of the awarded person. The medal is given with a special diploma informing that the award is a joint decision of the Polish Chemical Society and Standing Committee of the Congresses of Chemical Technology (Enclosure no. 2).
The Commemorative Medal is awarded to persons Medal is awarded to persons who rendered special services to the Polish Chemical Society, supporting its activity in Poland and abroad. The medal of silver-plated tombac shows on the face a portrait of Maria Skłodowska-Curie, her name and surname and years of her birth and death. The reverse presents the building of the Muzeum Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum and Polskiego Towarzystwa Chemicznego, together with the inscription “Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne” and the years “1919” (PCS foundation) and “1994” (75 anniversary of PCS). The medal is given with a special diploma.
The Zofia Matysikowa Distinction (Medal) is awarded to teachers of chemistry, members of PCS, for outstanding educational achievements. The face of the bronze medal presents a portrait of Zofia Matysikowa with the inscription “Wyróżnienie im. Zofii Matysikowej”, while the revers shows the inscriptions “Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne”, “Sekcja Dydaktyki Chemii” and “PTCh”. The medal is given with a special diploma informing that it is awarded by the Chemistry Teaching Section of PCS.
The distinction of the Jan Czochralski Lecture is given to an outstanding Polish chemist in the period of two years from getting a postdoctoral degree of habilitation received prior to the 40 years of age. PCS promotes and organizes a series of lectures at selected branches of PCS to be delivered by the distinguished person, which is a kind of promotion at the beginning of his/her independent scientific career. The distinction is confirmed with a special diploma.
